Turkey on Sunday condemned a deadly militant assault on a police compound in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, after at least 15 police officers were killed in a coordinated attack, according to local media reports and police officials.
In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Pakistan, reaffirming Ankara’s support for Islamabad’s counterterrorism efforts.
“Turkey will continue to stand in solidarity with Pakistan in its fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism,” the ministry said.
The attack occurred late Saturday in Bannu district, where a suspected suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into a police checkpoint, triggering a powerful explosion, Dawn News reported.
Gunmen then opened fire and detonated additional explosives in what authorities described as one of the deadliest attacks in the region in recent months.
Bannu police chief Sajjad Khan said three other officers were wounded in the assault.
Pakistan has faced a sustained rise in militant violence in recent years, particularly in areas bordering Afghanistan. Pakistani authorities have frequently accused Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of carrying out such attacks and say the group operates from bases inside Afghanistan, an allegation Kabul has repeatedly denied.
