Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud held a phone conversation on Sunday to discuss escalating regional tensions linked to Iran and ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources said.
During the call, the two ministers exchanged views on the latest developments and reviewed diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and supporting efforts to end the conflict, the sources added.
Regional hostilities have intensified since Feb. 28 following coordinated U.S.-Israeli strikes on targets in Iran. Casualty figures cited in regional reports indicate that more than 1,200 people were killed, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran later responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as sites in Jordan, Iraq and several Gulf states hosting U.S. military facilities, according to regional accounts.
Tehran has also announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil shipments. The move has disrupted tanker traffic, pushed up maritime insurance costs and contributed to a rise in international oil prices.
Diplomatic contacts among regional and international actors have intensified in recent days amid growing concern that further escalation could widen the conflict and threaten broader stability across the Middle East.
